HYLI - Youth Outreach
The Harvard Youth Leadership Initiative promotes leadership and life skills among middle school students in Cambridge public schools.
The HYLI program provides local middle school students with an interactive learning experience focused
on developing their personal leadership skills and self-esteem. The curriculum, instructed by Harvard students, was developed in collaboration with educational experts and Harvard faculty and student-leaders. It is built around five core topics: communication, teamwork, time management, ethics and resource management. A substantial amount of time during each program season is devoted to completing a final project where students, under the tutelage of Harvard mentors, use the skills they learn to plan and execute a substantial undertaking. This past spring, final projects included conducting community service activities, running fundraisers and planning community and school-wide events. The program runs weekly on Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00pm throughout the year.
