LIHC Accomplishments

The Leadership Institute has been pleased to work with a number of organizations and individuals dedicated to fostering successful leadership skills for Harvard students and community members.This list details some of the various events/accomplishments by The Leadership Institute in 2008 and 2009.

External

  • Formalized relationship with Ivy Council as official Harvard delegate and liaison
  • Led more than 50 Harvard student leaders to the 2009 Ivy Council Leadership Conference at Brown University in February 2009
  • Hosted the top Chinese university student council presidents in March 2009 as part of their Ivy League university tour
  • Finalized agreement with Undergraduate Council (Harvard student government) about separation of powers and duties to best benefit Harvard students
  • Consistently provided admitted students (”pre-frosh”)access to student leaders and information about extracurricular activities at Harvard; in 2009 more than 80 accepted students attended the “Meet the Presidents Panel” and more than 200 joined the e-mail list for LIHC leadership announcements
  • Established the Harvard Undergraduate Leadership Magazine and provided tools, tips and resources for Harvard students and other college associates to help learn, spread and share leadership knowledge.  Inaugural publication was in 2008; 1300 copies distributed on campus.
  • Organized Sales Training events (part of the popular “Why You?” series) to help student leaders promote their organizations and publicize their events to outside sponsors
  • Hosted series of discussion forums for similarly-styled organizations to commune and share ideas and knowledge for collaboration
  • Organized annual banquet for student leaders
  • Created and offered workshops for students on leadership skills

Internal

  • Organized LIHC socials with members to build friendships across committees
  • Hosted a 2-day Executive Board Leadership Summit in July 2009
  • Created a comprehensive Leadership Institute informational packet
  • Founded a Leadership Institute Board of Advisers composed of professors and Harvard graduate students to help guide the organization through periods of transition and expansion
  • Institutionalized internal trainings exclusively for members with professors, trainers and consultants on various leadership techniques
  • Won a $50,000 grant from the Flora Family Foundation

Outreach

  • In 2007, started the Philip Brooks House Association (PHBA) organization Harvard Youth Leadership Initiative (HYLI) which successfully serves at-risk middle school students in Cambridge
  • Currently developing a leadership training curriculum for middle school students with the nationally-acclaimed Citizen Schools
  • Partnership with the African Leadership Academy; after hosting ALA Founder Fred Swaniker, LIHC devised a partnership “pen-pal” program to pair the high school student leaders at ALA with Harvard undergraduate student leaders to help the ALA students grow during high school and make the transition to American and European universities.
